The night before our arrival in degrad des cannes we saw the launch of an ariane rocket. the thing goes up in a straight line, then a flash, the two auxiliary rockets are thrown off and a small point keeps rising to the stars - a couple of seconds later we hear the bang. after the show, the wind blows away the white trace.
We leave Cayenne full of impressions: French number plates in South America, French food (baguettes, cheese, sausages, ...), ... and French prices plus 20%. The town itself is a mix of nice houses built in the colonial style and architectural sins of the 1970s.
Washing day on Anahita in the marina of Degrad des Cannes. Alexa takes advantage of the neighbour's washing machine. Most of the yachts here are moored to the pontoon for years. Accordingly, the grow vegetables under the water line.
In Kourou the anchorage is located a bit far from the commercial center of town. Hitchhiking around worked very well - especially when we travelled with our children. Plenty of birds live in the mangrove and ugly flat fish jump out of the water when we pass along with our dinghi - great fun for Mila and Max. The cargo ship MN Colibri in the background of the photo brings the empty container for the next Ariane rocket back to Europe.
At anchor at the Iles du Salut. Here we meet a lot of our friends from Brazil who are also on the way to the Carribbean. At the beginning of the last century, the islands were occupied by a high-security prison - described in "Papillon". They now belong to the space center and are host to monkeys, turtles and other exotic animals.
The launching site of Ariane 5. There is not much high-tech about a rocket: aerosols represent 90% of its mass, 9% are the structure of the rocket, and only 1% the satellites.
